So a few days ago, I decided to stop washing my hair.
Now it's not gross like it sounds! I'm just not using shampoo or conditioner anymore. Instead, I'm starting to use the "No Poo" method, as in no shampoo (or conditioner!). Now using No Poo is supposed to make your hair healthier, shinier, more manageable, grow faster, and the biggest selling point (at least for me...), you only have to "wash" your hair once or twice a week! It won't even look greasy or dirty. Regular shampoo strips your hair of all it's natural oils, so it overproduces oil to make up for it, resulting in the need to wash your hair every day.
How does No Poo work?
Here's the deal: you wash your hair with baking soda and use vinegar as your conditioner. Not just straight up, of course. You dilute them with water, at least with the method I'm using:
1. Take 1 tablespoon of baking soda and put it into a squeeze bottle along with 1 cup of water. Shake until baking soda is completely dissolved.
2. Take 2 tablespoons of regular white vinegar and put it into a spray bottle with 1 cup of water. Shake to combine.
3. In the shower, get your hair wet, and then use the squeeze bottle to apply the baking soda solution to mainly your roots, and massage in. It should feel sort of slippery after a minute or so of massaging. Rinse out.
4. Spray the vinegar solution on the length of your hair, not on your roots, focusing on the ends. Leave this on your hair for a few minutes and then rinse out.
That's it! The only downside to No Poo is the transition period. I can't tell you much about this because I just started using this method, but you should expect your hair to be a little dirty and feel different for the first week to couple weeks. For me, the first time washing my hair with this method, it felt and looked great after it dried, but we'll see how it reacts over the next few weeks. I'll keep you updated on how it's going. For others, it may be different.
After you wash your hair like this for the first time, you're going to want to go as many days as you can before washing it again. This will help your hair get used to regulating the production of oil. Today is day 3 for me, and I'm going to wash it tomorrow. The next time around I might try to go 4 days. Eventually, I'm expecting to only have to wash it every 5-6 days! I'm going to save so much money not using shampoo and conditioner.
